## What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves lying inside a sealed chamber and breathing 100% oxygen while the air pressure around you is raised to roughly 1.3 to 2 times normal atmospheric pressure. Under these conditions, your lungs can absorb far more oxygen than they can at normal pressure, and that oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma, not just your red blood cells. ## A Note on Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is one of the most frequently discussed off-label uses of hyperbaric chambers, particularly among patients dealing with chronic, lingering symptoms after antibiotic treatment (sometimes called post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome). The reasoning some practitioners offer is that the increased oxygen levels created by HBOT may be hostile to certain bacteria and may help calm the inflammation associated with long-term Lyme symptoms like fatigue and joint pain.
It's important to be transparent here: the FDA has not cleared or approved HBOT for Lyme disease. Research on HBOT for Lyme disease is limited, mostly small-scale, and not conclusive. Some of this research is promising, but much of it is preliminary. ## Is It Safe?
For approved conditions delivered at accredited facilities, HBOT is generally considered safe, with side effects usually limited to ear pressure discomfort or temporary vision changes. Serious complications are rare but can include oxygen toxicity or, in poorly maintained equipment, fire risk due to the high-oxygen environment. This is exactly why the FDA recommends receiving treatment only through an experienced provider at an accredited facility rather than an unregulated wellness clinic.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a genuinely powerful medical tool with strong evidence behind it for wound healing, surgical recovery, and a handful of serious acute conditions.
